SUPERHERO PHYSICS

Superhero Physics gave me the opportunity to combine science and creativity in a medium no one can resist: superheroes. Each concept in the curriculum was tied to a superhero movie clip that allowed us to use our new knowledge of physics to complete calculations that were meaningful, rather than just another problem in a textbook.
A great deal of the class included combining our efforts with classmates to complete problems in class as well as out of class that pertained to the movie clip of the day. We learned about basic concepts, such as force, as well as very abstract concepts, such as the possibility and physical speculations of wormholes in our universe. I have included two of my Power Points as an example.
Our final project was to create a superhero and a supervillain with both a major and minor power as well as strengths and weaknesses outlined. The catch was that the superpower had to be somewhat defined by physics and the concepts we learned. The icing on the cake was that we collaborated with a classmate to create a final battle between our combined superhero force and the combined supervillain force. After we presented the scenario in any medium we chose, we were required to calculate three physics problems from the battle that demonstrated our knowledge of what we learned during the course. I have included both the final powerpoint and the script that told of the showdown.
I admit that my knowledge of physics is rather limited due to my lack of physics requirements in my music education curriculum. However, I did have the chance to learn about something completely different than in my typical music class. I greatly enjoy math and discovering how everyday occurrences can be measured and compared, which is exactly what we did in this course. I learned how to go frame by frame in a video clip, use new computer programs, develop and use formulas, and analyze superhero and everyday actions in their physics relationships.
This was a fast-paced, jam-packed class filled with experiments, calculations, and best of all, superheroes! I would recommend this class to any person, regardless of major, that has an interest in basic physics, peer collaboration, and the power of superheroes.
