The photo above demonstrates my interpretation of the University Honors Program. Though college is by far not an easy task, UHP is there to give me the support and guidance I need to get the most out of my college education and to experience things I never dared to achieve on my own.
Gateway to University Honors
Gateway to University Honors is a course that is designed to introduce students to the opportunities and requirements of the Honors Program at UC. We had an opportunity to meet other honors students in various degree programs, as well as collaborate to form new ideas, new experiences, and new concepts of what it means to be an honors student at UC. This course also provided us an opportunity to look at the five subjects around which we could design our own honors experience. These topics are leadership, community service, research, creative arts, and global studies. We were given ideas, examples, and connections on campus that provided the gateway for how to get involved in these activities.
Part of our goal for this class was to discover what we are passionate about in our community, as well as in the world. We brainstormed ideas with classmates about how to put our interests into action and then we discovered how the University Honors Program can help us get there. Since experiential learning is a new concept for many students, we learned a great deal about what constitutes an "experience" and what types of activities we can propose to be considered as an experience. This helped me to plan out what types of experiences I wanted to complete over my college career that were both related to and unrelated to my degree choice.
This portfolio you are viewing is also a result of the Gateway class. We had checkpoints and examples that prepared us to create an e-portfolio that reflects our personality and passions. I have included below some documents that I created during my Gateway course that I believe exemplify the types of projects we completed and how it set us up for success in the rest of our college career. The document entitled, "This I Believe" This statement represents who I am and what I think is important. It was beneficial to look deep into my morals and beliefs and to define a part of who I am for others to see. This project was evaluated by my peer review group who gave valid thoughts on correction and elaboration, which helped this work get to the level it is now. As one of the final projects of this class, I created a self-designed experience proposal for an experience I thought I would complete in the future (Though I never did complete this project, I did have a different spin on this concept in a summer job I held). This course was designed to start students off in their journey of the UC Honors Program, and what better way than to help each student design a personalized honors proposal.
