This was my first (and last) college English course that I took while at UC. I went in thinking I was going to practice my writing with hundreds of writing assignments and work that was simply busywork, rather than engaging, challenging work. I was in for a surprise when I went to class every week ready to discuss, be challenged, and compose papers in collaboration with my classmates. I was able to move past menial writing and move onto the presentation of meaningful discussion.
The main focus of this class were the Seven Currents of Society. These include Belief System, Family, Education, Economy, Leisure, Media, and Governance which are a part of the American Society. Through articles, research, discussion, and literature connections, the English 2989 class of Dr. Frank A Davis defined how each current looks in the American society of today as well as what we would like to see as the ideal situation of what each current could be in American society as we look into the future. After a great deal of reflection, discussion, and reading, we divided into groups and each group focused on one of the currents of society in depth to define the real and ideal situations.
Each person has a different view of what these currents are and how they affect society as a whole. One particular current that our class found to be incredibly controversial was Governance, which we also renamed Democracy. Each person has a slightly different view of how a governing body should provide for the people and in what types of everyday activities the governing body should be allowed to interfere. Due to this being a topic of great discussion, our professor provided extra research, further readings, and more time to allow us to work together as a class to come up with a working definition of what Governance/Democracy is and both how it is currently and what we consider an ideal current of Governance. These types of experiences in English 2989 were key to opening my mind to thoughtful, respectful discussion that has helped me in other classes as well as in my own research. I am more able to go into a situation and listen and think objectively about it. I have grown in my studies in the interpretation of music because my mind has been opened and expanded by this course. I hope to carry what I have learned from this class with me far beyond college.
My group focused primarily on the current of Family. The real situation we discovered was about the discrepancy in time parents/guardians spend at work versus with the family. There are many reasons why this discrepancy exists, which are outlined in the Real Paper my group composed. Through collaboration, research, and creativity, we also created the Ideal Paper, which outlines what we think would be a future where family and work can coexist and each can have significance while neither atrophies due to lack of commitment.
